The GN MDRO Workshop, supported through an educational grant from Pfizer, has been conducted regionally across Malaysia to strengthen antimicrobial stewardship and improve the management of resistant infections. The programme is led by Dato’ Chow Ting Soo in collaboration with infectious diseases physicians from the Ministry of Health Malaysia and local universities.
The workshop enhances clinicians’ understanding of important Gram-negative MDRO pathogens, including ESBL-producing Enterobacterales, AmpC-producing organisms, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE), multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Using a problem-based learning (PBL) approach, the programme focuses on early recognition of resistant infections, appropriate antimicrobial selection, microbiological interpretation, and the application of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) principles to optimise antibiotic therapy.
The sessions further emphasise practical clinical decision-making, including empiric treatment in severe sepsis, antibiotic de-escalation guided by culture results, timely infectious diseases consultation, and interpretation of local and regional resistance trends to support evidence-based management.
Overall, the programme has strengthened awareness and promoted more judicious antibiotic use among healthcare practitioners, supporting national efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance and improve outcomes in patients with serious Gram-negative infections.
